1. Consistency is key.
If you want to build an audience, you have to post regularly. I stopped sharing content here for over a year because I simply didn’t feel motivated. You’ll go through times like this. Every blogger experiences this every now and then. But just keep on keeping on. Being consistent will bring traffic to your blog.
2. Blogging is so much work.
I didn’t know that blogging would require so much hard work. You have no idea how many times I’ve thought of giving up because it’s a lot harder than I thought it would be. But everyday I’m reminded that if you want something to grow, you have to put in a lot of work, time and commitment.
3. Choose quality over quantity.
It’s not about how much you post, it’s about how much what you post impacts other people. If your followers find your content valuable, they’ll engage with it and check back regularly.
4. Be friendly
Blogging is about socializing. I’ve met some really cool people on the internet and we’ve become friends. Yes, some people are arrogant and selfish but just ignore them. Engage with your followers by replying to their comments. Be open to making friends, reach out to people who share content that’s similar to yours, share tips and engage with their posts.
5. Patience
Your blog isn’t going to grow overnight. So don’t beat yourself up about how many followers or comments you get. Just do your best and keep creating. Everything in due time.
6. Quit comparing yourself to others.
No one is you. You are you and that your power. I won’t lie, I have compared myself to other bloggers. I look at how they are getting a lot of engagement from their followers, how many likes they get. Once you get into blogging you’ll compare yourself to others. It’s inevitable. But don’t feel discouraged. You’re not the first blogger and definitely aren’t the last. There are thousands of blogs out there and all you have to do is be unique and passionate. That will set you apart.
7. Not everyone is going to like your content.
And that’s okay. You have different interests and so do other people. Do you like every post you see online? I bet your answer is ‘No’. So if people unfollow you, don’t stress about it. It means that they are not your target audience. Let them go. I used to be so bent on followers but not anymore. Don’t mind the numbers and just focus on your content.
8. It’s okay to take a break.
Don’t overwork yourself. Have some time off every once in a while to just relax your mind. I always unplug and I’ve found that it’s refreshing. During that time I get motivated and it helps me to think of creative ideas.
9. Try out new things.
Learning never stops. Once you begin to close yourself up to new ideas, you won’t learn. Be open to trying out new things and explore. Some things will not work out but one thing is for sure; you’ll learn from them and that’s a win!
10. Be yourself!
It’s important to be authentic and not try to be like other people. Your followers will connect with you more when you’re your real self and what’s more, they’ll be inspired to be themselves too. Find your voice and write as though you’re speaking to someone from across the table. It’s your voice that differentiates you from everyone else.
I can’t say that I am perfect. I am a work in progress and I keep reminding myself about these things. I hope that you’ll find them helpful as well.
